Children's Dentistry

There is often confusion about when you should bring your child to the dentist. As a general rule, you should bring your child in when their first tooth appears or at 12 months of age, which ever comes first. Often it is much better to establish good oral hygiene practices early on and for your child to be comfortable coming to the dentist. If you do notice anything out of the ordinary, don't hesitate to come in earlier, as it is better to be safe than sorry.

During the early visits, our dentists may discuss issues such as teething, hygiene techniques, nutritional advice, habits such as thumb sucking and prevention of decay and trauma.

Before your child's first visit, remind yourself that you play an important role in making it a positive and enjoyable experience. Use positive and child friendly terms such as 'tooth fairy' or 'going for a ride in the chair.' Try to avoid negative stories/experiences and words such as 'drill, pull, needle and hurt.'
